KUALA LUMPUR: A frozen meat importer allegedly involved in the Johor meat cartel scandal will be indicted in court tomorrow for using a fake halal logo on his vehicles.

According to the Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Rosol Wahid (pix), the action thus refuted the allegation that the government was trying to protect certain companies or those involved in the issue of great concern among Muslims in the country.

“It’s not that we don’t want to expose the company involved, but the problem is that the crime was committed by a meat cartel using the logo of another company that is famous for its highly sought-after products.

“If we expose the name of the allegedly victimized company, it will tarnish its image and reputation,” he said, closing the debate on the issue of the meat cartel proposed by Senator Asmak Husin.

Almost 10 senators spoke during the debate after Senate President Tan Sri Rais Yatim allowed the motion to be debated in accordance with Standing Order 17 (1).

Rosol explained that the government had never underestimated the problem and had taken some strong measures against those involved, including freezing assets worth RM1 million, as well as the seizure of 24 rubber stamps from companies with high demands, 5,000 halal stickers from Jakim and 2,428 boxes of frozen meat. estimated at RM738,640.

At the same time, he also refuted the report claiming that the meat cartel’s activity has been going on for almost 40 years.

“It is not true that the activity has been going on for almost 40 years because the ministry’s investigation revealed that the company involved was registered in 2014 and obtained the license to import frozen products in 2017.

“In addition, the results of the tests carried out by the Department of Chemistry on the frozen meat samples taken from their warehouse confirmed that they were not pork or horse and kangaroo meat, which is a relief for all,” he said.

To avoid a repeat of the scandal, Rosol said the ministry had established a halal and legal enforcement committee to coordinate halal enforcement issues and action in the country. -Called
