KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin received a resounding reception from the people after he brought up the subject of the prime minister in a ceramah here tonight.

“You may be wondering if I’m still your prime minister,” he said at the Hilltop Ceramah, Luyang.

“This is because an opposition leader, it is not necessary to mention his name, said that he had the numbers and that I do not have the majority support, so he believes he has the right to be prime minister.

“But I am here to tell you that I am still your prime minister,” he said to cheers and applause from the people gathered there.

PKR President Anwar Ibrahim held a press conference today in which he said he had “strong, formidable and convincing” support from parliamentarians to form a government.

Muhyiddin said he was not questioning the opposition leader’s claim because he “respected opinions.”

“But we have to understand that our country is practicing a system of parliamentary democracy.

“So we have to defend the Federal Constitution as the basis for everything we want to implement,” he said, adding that the matter would be left to the discretion of Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin reiterated the need for the state and federal governments to be aligned to ensure that Sabah receives the best assistance for any future development.

He said he was not claiming that Acting Chief Minister Shafie Apdal, whom he described as a good friend, had done nothing for Sabah, but that the state needed to cooperate fully with the federal government.

Muhyiddin, who had just arrived from Kuala Lumpur, was speaking at a ceramah in support of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate for Luyang, Gee Tien Siong and the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Likas, Chang Kee Ying.
