PETALING JAYA, Oct 26 – She is best recognized for her voice and now, you can hear veteran radio host Datuk Yasmin Yusoff in your car as he helps you circumvent Malaysian traffic on Waze.
Users of the traffic navigation app can select the voice of the iconic Bahasa Malay entertainment personality from the list available under ‘voice instructions’.
The former Miss Universe Malaysia provides motorists with turn-by-turn directions as well as life-saving reminders, such as buckling up and slowing down when approaching a red light.
Drivers will also recognize Malaysian expressions like “alamak, miss!” when they miss a start and “lubang lagi”, warning wazers of potholes later on.
“I tend to get frustrated with the incorrect pronunciation of our street names and the thought: why not do something and express them myself?” Yasmin said in a press release.
“As I happen to be a professional broadcaster and also the original voice for LRT, I thought it would be fun to do Waze too.
“All I needed was to offer my voice on the Waze Malaysia Facebook group, and before I knew it, I was contacted, I auditioned and voila, I am the Bahasa voice of Waze!”
The veteran actress and singer added that she only gave step-by-step instructions this time, but hopes she can make street names one day.
The famed Malay-German radio host built a successful career in show business after representing Malaysia in the 1978 Miss Universe pageant in Acapulco, Mexico, winning the second runner-up for Best National Costume.
Yasmin became a radio host for Radio 4, also singing various songs in the late 70s and early 80s, acting in TV dramas and movies, managing talent, and producing various musicals, to name a few.
In addition to voice navigation of famous personalities, Waze also allows users to record their own voice using the ‘record new voice’ feature in settings.
