Ice cream seller accused of torturing and killing 3 cats

GEORGE TOWN: An ice cream vendor today pleaded not guilty to one count of abusing three cats and causing their death in a home near Bayan Lepas last year.

Saiful Azhar Md Rahani, 35, shook his head when asked if he wanted to plead guilty to the charge that was read to him in Court of Sessions here this morning.

He was charged with torturing three cats to death in a countless house in Jalan Teluk Bayu, Sungai Batu, on February 26, 2019 at 4:45 pm

Saiful can be fined between RM20,000 and RM100,000, or imprisoned for up to three years, or both, after being convicted under Section 29 (1) (e) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015.

Judge Mazdi Abdul Hamid accepted the prosecution’s request to allow the defendant to appoint a lawyer, as he was not represented. He set October 12 for the defendants to appear in court again with a lawyer.

Deputy prosecutor Roziman Awang Tahrin prosecuted.

Earlier this week, a Penang employee was fined RM30,000 after she pleaded guilty to neglecting her two dogs in a home, with one of them starving to death.

Store worker claims lawsuit for owning 15 toy guns

Separately, a 25-year-old store supervisor has pleaded not guilty to a charge of possession and importation of imitation weapons in Magistrates Court here today.

Gabriel Ong Fu Lye was charged with possession of 15 imitation toy pistols at the Palm Court Trading sundries store on Palm Court Flats in Tanjung Tokong on July 29.

He was charged under Section 36 of the Weapons Act 1960, which carries a fine of RM5,000 or one year in jail upon conviction.

Deputy Prosecutor Yazid Mustaqim Roslan asked the court to set bail at RM 5,000, while Ong’s lawyer, Audrey Wee, asked for a lower bail.

Judge Jamaliah Abd Manap allowed a bail of RM 4,000 on a guarantee and posted October 7 as a mention. E Gnasegaran also appeared for Ong.

The case is related to the arrest of a 35-year-old security guard who was driving his motorcycle with a fake pistol purchased from Palm Court Trading.

Mohd Redzuan Mohd was jailed for three months by the Balik Pulau Magistrates Court after he pleaded guilty to possessing an imitation gun under Section 36 of the Weapons Law 1960 on July 28.
