LONDON: After nearly a year of blackout video conferencing, even the leaders of the Group of Seven were unable to escape the silent curse on Friday when British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had to tell the German leader to turn off his microphone.

As Johnson began the meeting, the German suddenly interrupted him as he tried to tell people like the president of the United States, Joe Biden, and the new Prime Minister of Italy, Mario Draghi, that he wanted a face-to-face meeting at the G7 summit in June.

“Can you hear us Angela,” Johnson joked about the German, chuckling.

“I think you need to silence.”

Johnson, who is known for his gaffes, also claimed that Biden had “nicked” (British slang for stealing) his catchphrase “rebuild better”, although Johnson joked that he himself had probably stolen it from elsewhere.
