GEORGE TOWN: A prosecutor in Lim Guan Eng’s two recent counts of criminal misappropriation of state property worth RM208.7 million said today that the former minister had misrepresented his words for a “99% chance of conviction” comment. .
Lim said today that the comment was inappropriate as it prejudged that he was guilty long before the trial begins.
In response, Assistant Prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin said that he had simply made a general statement on what kind of charges came to court.
“The reporters asked me what were the chances we had in the case.
“I said that when the Attorney General’s Office or the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission decide to accuse someone, they think that they would have a 99% chance of conviction, and that the remaining 1% would be left to God.
“I never said that Guan Eng’s case specifically would have a 99% conviction (probability).
“I am not arrogant.
“We all know that the courts would have the last word to decide whether a person is innocent or guilty. She’s twisting my words, ”she told FMT.
Lim was charged with misappropriating government property worth RM 208 million in Penang state land involving two companies on Friday.
Following his indictment, journalists asked Shaharuddin about the most recent case, compared to previous ones, to which he replied that she was “the mother of all cases”.
The journalists also asked him about the chances of conviction, to which he said that the prosecution would only select cases with a “99% chance of conviction.”
Previously, Lim maintained that the charges were “unfounded and illogical” as he had not obtained any benefit from the transfer of state land to two development companies under his position under Section 403 of the Penal Code.
His case has been transferred to the Court of Sessions in Kuala Lumpur, with an appointment set for October 12.
