I need to deserve a new deal

Pep Guardiola has said that he will only start discussions on a new deal with Manchester City when he feels he “deserves” to stay at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola has a contract until the end of the season, and while he says he is open to extending his stay, the 49-year-old insists his future will be determined by his on-field performances this season.

“I would love to stay here longer, it’s a place I love to be, but I have to deserve it,” Guardiola said.

“This club reached the standards in the last decade, but we have to maintain that and I have to deserve it. I’m going to see if I deserve it this season in terms of how the club progresses and improves.”

“This is my mind. We do not speak to the club in these terms. They did not pressure me from day one until today in September. They did not tell me that you have to do this or you have to do that or you have to win this or you have to win that. .

“I know the club’s standards and if I don’t achieve them, I probably don’t deserve [to stay] so I have to win to extend my contract. “

Guardiola has never spent more than four seasons with a club during his coaching career, but will begin his fifth year in charge of City with Monday’s trip to the Wolves.

He has already won all the domestic honors in England, but the City manager insists he still has the energy to go on and try to wrest the Premier League title from Liverpool.

“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t feel the fire or the desire to play well,” Guardiola added.

“I still want to help the players avoid making mistakes and I still have a passion for doing it and maybe more than ever. I want to try to be together and have a good season. The organization is so strong in all departments. It will be a problem for the club do what we have to do in the future ”.
