Huawei Mate 40 Pro Hands On: the most attractive flagship of the brand so far

[ad_1]

Huawei recently released the new Mate 40 series comprising three models: a standard variant, Pro model and Pro Plus. Thanks to a preview session organized by the brand, I was able to test the Pro version of the new phone before launch. Here’s a quick look at Huawei’s latest flagship smartphone offering for 2020.

At first glance, the Mate 40 Pro’s curved FHD + screen looks almost identical to Huawei’s previous flagship model, the P40 Pro. Likewise, it also features a 90Hz refresh rate, 240Hz touch sample rate, and a pill-shaped dual camera cutout in upper left corner. The main difference between the two is the Mate’s larger screen, which measures 6.76 inches and comes with an FHD + resolution of 2772 x 1344 pixels.

The rear design of the phone is really attractive, thanks to the frosted metallic finish of its case, especially the Mystic Silver color that I was provided to test. Like its predecessor, the new Huawei Mate 40 Pro features a circular island for the rear camera setup. But instead of a simple black circle, its cameras are now arranged in a halo-like design known as the “space ring.” A minor but much needed design improvement, in my opinion.

Due to the limited time I had with the phone, I was not able to fully test the overall performance of the Mate 40 Pro, especially in terms of internal hardware and battery life. In short, the phone is equipped with a Kirin 9000 chipset, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of internal storage, and a battery capacity of 4,400 mAh. The new phone runs on EMUI 11 (based on Android 10), which is based on the Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) ecosystem.

With that said, I spent some time testing the photography capabilities of the Huawei Mate 40 Pro. Its 50MP primary shooter delivered impressive results, where photos showed vibrant colors and clear details. The same can be said for its telephoto lens, which offers up to 7x optical zoom capabilities, allowing you to preserve more detail when photographing distant subjects. Going beyond your optical zoom limit will allow you to activate hybrid zoom technology up to 10x, and going beyond it will be done digitally up to 50x.

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro has a lot more to offer in terms of performance, photography, and even video recording. Hopefully I’ll be able to share a more in-depth look at these with you in a full review. Huawei has yet to reveal the launch date and price for the new Mate 40 series in Malaysia, but an announcement is expected to be made soon.
