The Back Tap feature introduced alongside iOS 14 is actually a quality of life addition that iPhone users never knew they needed. With this, your favorite apps like Spotify or Facebook can be easily launched right away just by tapping the back of your phone.

The new feature also saves you the time of searching for a specific application in your library, especially those that you didn’t expect to play an important role in your daily life. These I am referring to are local contact tracing apps like MySejahtera and SELangkah.

The approach of using Back Tap to launch the aforementioned contact tracing apps was originally pointed out in a user post @taga in our own forum Lowyat.net. He explained that this is very useful when visiting facilities like restaurants or shopping centers that require you to log in through these applications.

That brings us here to today’s guide. This is how you too can enjoy the convenience of using the new Back Tap feature in iOS 14 to easily launch your contact tracker apps.

First of all, make sure you have updated to iOS 14 on your iPhone (obviously). Second, you also need to make sure that your iPhone model actually supports the new Back Tap feature. For your reference, compatible models include iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Back Tap iOS 14 Contact Tracking

For this guide, we use an iPhone 11 Pro Max that has been updated to the public version of iOS 14. Here are the step-by-step instructions you need to follow:

Step 1: Open Shortcuts application

Step 2: It should be in the All Shortcuts folder, in the My Shortcuts section. Click on the “+” at the top right of the app.

Step 3: Within New shortcut see, press Add action >> Scripting >> Open application.

Step 4: Click on “Choose”Part of the scripting block.

Step 5: Choose the application you want to associate with the Back Tap function. In this example, we are going to use MySejahtera as it is currently Malaysia’s national contact tracing app.

Step 6: press the next option at the top right of the app.

Step 7: Name the Shortcut you just created and press Done at the top right of the app. We title it as MySejahtera.

Step 8: Go Settings. Then choose Accessibility >> Tap >> Tap Back.

Step 9: Choose any Double touch or Triple tap according to your preference. We choose Double Tap in this example.

Step 10: Scroll down to the Shortcuts section and choose the shortcuts you want to associate with the Back Tap feature. In our example here, we choose the MySejahtera shortcut that we created in step 7.

And that is! You should now be able to fully utilize the Back Tap feature to quickly launch MySejahtera or the applications of your choice. Also, if you are using more than one contact tracker app; We recommend that you continue from Step 3, create a separate profile for the second application (eg SELangkah) and assign it to Triple Tap. This would now allow you to launch two different applications via Back Tap.

Thanks again to forum user @taga for the tip! Credits to Chief Chapree as well for contributing to this story.
