PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Health is concerned about the high number of asymptomatic patients with Covid-19 among students in tahfiz schools in the country.
Chief Health Officer Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said 539 students from Tahfiz or 84.9% of the 635 students who tested positive for Covid-19 showed no signs of infection.
“This is why we are concerned that Tahfiz students, teachers and staff returning to their villages and homes may think they are healthy but may transmit the virus to their friends and family, especially their older grandparents,” he said in the newspaper. Those who had not yet returned home, he added, were asked to remain in their madrasah to allow authorities to better control the situation.
As of yesterday, 19,209 tahfiz students, teachers and staff have been identified from 370 madrasah and tahfiz centers across the country.
“Of this, a total of 12,384 samples have been analyzed with 635 positive cases and 10,755 negative cases.
“We are still waiting for the results of 944 cases,” he said, adding that there was a worrying increase in the trend of infections in this group, which increased from 4.4% last week to 5.1% today.
Dr. Noor Hisham said, however, that students and staff from some 1,000 private madrasah schools across the country have yet to show up for screening and testing.
The ministry, he added, would also not conduct mass testing, but would stick to its specific tried-and-tested approach.
This was despite increasing their daily testing capacity to 26,673 out of 45 laboratories.
“If you evaluate everyone, the next question is, how often do you test it? So instead of evaluating everyone, we focus on the target groups.
“And we have seen that the first three phases of the motion control order (MCO) have shown positive results. We managed to flatten the curve.
“We use the resources we have in specific groups to produce a high impact and a good result at a reasonable cost,” he said.
The eight target groups identified by the ministry are: Masjid Jamek Seri Petaling meeting cluster, tahfiz schools, areas under improved MCO, markets related to Pasar Borong Kuala Lumpur, nursing homes, foreign construction workers, construction workers Health and Malaysian Citizens returning from abroad.
Previously, Dr. Noor Hisham announced 40 more cases of Covid-19 and one new death, bringing the number of deaths to 112.
He also said that 70 more patients had been discharged in the same 24-hour span, meaning 5,351 patients had recovered from Covid-19 since the outbreak in Malaysia began.
Currently, there are only 1,356 active cases under treatment in the country’s health centers.
Currently, 16 patients are under intensive care, four of them with ventilator support.
