On the first day of 2021, it was reported that people were unable to download the most popular mobile game of 2020, Honor of Kings, through Huawei’s app gallery. In fact, they were unable to download games from the Tencent company, due to a dispute over a promotional deal.

Besides Honor of Kings, Arena of Valor was also temporarily removed from Huawei’s app gallery. Although Tencent has a minority stake in PUBG’s company Epic Games, it appears that PUBG was not removed.

Despite running on Android, Huawei offers AppGallery to allow users to discover and download applications. In China, all devices do not have official access to Google, and smartphone manufacturers offer their own respective app stores. For international markets, new Huawei devices are shipped without the Google Play Store due to US government restrictions.

“Tencent Games unilaterally made significant changes to the cooperation between the two parties … resulting in significant obstacles to continued cooperation. After careful evaluation by our legal team, we had to comply with Tencent’s relevant unilateral request to stop cooperation and remove Tencent games from Huawei’s application gallery, ”said an official notice posted on the gaming community. from Huawei.

Furthermore, the notice said that while Huawei “does not agree” to Tencent’s changes, they “understand Tencent’s request.” Huawei also mentioned that “they admire the achievements and absolute market position of Tencent’s gaming business.”

According to Reuters, Huawei insisted on a 50% cut in Tencent’s game sales in its app store. While Tencent sells some of the most popular online games around the world, Huawei has a 41.4% share of the Chinese mobile phone market and a 14.9% share of the global market.

On the same day, after Tencent “actively communicated and negotiated” with Huawei, Tencent published a notice saying that the company had reached an agreement with the phone company. Games that were previously removed are now available again.

“Both parties will continue to work together to provide even better customer experiences and services,” said Tencent.

While Tencent has reached an agreement with Huawei, several game developers have objected to Huawei’s revenue demands. Among them were Shanghai-based Mihoyo, who developed the Genshin Impact game, and Lilith Games, who developed the Rise of Kingdoms game.

In November 2020, Apple launched the App Store Small Business program. It allows those who qualify to pay a 15% commission, down from the usual 30% “Apple Tax.”
