KUALA LUMPUR: For just RM 25, you can now be an animal savior by adopting one of Zoo Negara’s many animals.
Under the zoo’s “Adopt an Animal” online initiative, the amount goes to help with food, maintenance and veterinary care.
The best part is that the “parent” may even have exclusive access to those adopted under the initiative that began in 1981.
Negara Zoo Vice President Rosly @ Rahmat Amat Lana said that despite the motion control order and conditional MCO imposed during the Covid-19 outbreak, the zoo had received an encouraging response in terms of donations, with many new donors stepping in.
“We received overwhelmingly positive feedback as evidenced by the many encouraging and compassionate words that were shared on various social media platforms.
“The number of donors increased, especially from April to August, with almost 50,000 donors.
“In addition to traditional media, our team also uses the zoo’s Instagram (@zoonegara_malaysia) and Facebook (Zoo Negara Malaysia) accounts.
“We look forward to further expanding by offering live streams of updates and interacting with viewers in real time through a dedicated YouTube channel,” he said yesterday.
As a means for animal lovers and zoo supporters to contribute direct funds through the “Adopt An Animal” program, Zoo Negara has partnered with Ticket2U, Maybank2U, Lazada and Shopee since 2017 to facilitate public contribution. .
He said the program, which allows the public to symbolically adopt 30 species of animals, was part of an initiative to provide Zoo Negara with the valuable funds needed for general animal husbandry needs, and donations make a significant difference.
When asked how much the program would contribute to Zoo Negara’s revenue, Rosly said it could only be determined once the conditional MCO is lifted.
