Health system at breaking point, MCO proposal addressed

COVID-19 | The director general of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, sounded the alarm about the state of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, prescribing a “selective” version of the motion control order (MCO) to reduce stress on the healthcare system.

During a press conference tonight, he said the healthcare system was struggling to cope with the number of patients.

“Our healthcare system has been under pressure and we are at a critical point because cases are increasing every day. We may not be able to accommodate patients in our facilities.

“We are investigating how we can improve our healthcare system. But the best thing is not only to improve our healthcare system … but also to reduce the burden,” he said.

Not only were public health intervention systems, such as contact tracing, delayed, but Noor Hisham said they were “collapsing.”

The senior health official said the country needed a “circuit breaker” and had proposed that the government implement a more “specific” version of the MCO to reduce the number of cases.

“It’s a more specific approach. Instead of (involving) the entire nation like we did for MCO on March 18 of last year.

“Now I think our strategy will change, we are more localized and focused in terms of implementation. Discussions are ongoing and we will probably make some decisions as soon as possible,” he said.
