KUCHING: The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee announced today that all public and private gyms in Kuching will be closed with immediate effect, while food outlets can only operate from 6 am to 10 pm, until further notice.

Its president, Douglas Uggah Embas, said that all social and official events will be restricted to a maximum of 200 people.

Sarawak today reported a total of 27 cases of Covid-19, including 15 close contacts of a man who tested positive on Monday (October 26), it said.

“There are 14 close contacts who tested positive in Kuching while one was in Miri.

“Miri’s man had visited the index case here and had returned to Miri on October 21, where he later developed a sore throat, fever and cough,” Uggah said at a press conference today.

Uggah, who is also the deputy chief minister, said that six other cases involved people between the ages of 19 and 54, who had come for COVID-19 tests in private hospitals.

“The remaining six cases were imported cases with patients who tested positive while undergoing their mandatory 14-day quarantine at designated centers,” he said.

Uggah said a new group has been identified as the “Greenhill Cluster” in Kuching, with a total of 21 positive cases detected so far.

Four other groups remain active in Sarawak, namely the Bah Arnab group, the Putra group, the Baki groups and the Seladah group.

Yesterday, the committee had classified Kuching as a red zone, while all reflexology and entertainment media in Sarawak had been ordered to shut down in the state government’s efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19.
