The charge falls under Section 23 (1) of the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which provides for a prison term of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the the amount or value of the bonus, or RM10,000, whichever is greater, if convicted.

For the case here, Lim was tasked with applying for a bonus to help the company secure Penang’s roads and the underwater tunnel project.
