KUALA LUMPUR: Former Penang Prime Minister Lim Guan Eng will face trial in June next year on corruption charges related to the Penang Submarine Tunnel Project.
The Judge of the Court of Sessions, Azura Alwi, set several dates between June and December, starting on June 8.
During handling of the case on Monday (December 21), Lim also pleaded not guilty to two amended charges.
The first amended charge was that of requesting a bonus to help a company secure the Penang Underwater Tunnel project, while he was serving as Penang’s prime minister at the time.
The alleged bribery of Datuk Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli consisted of 10% of the profits that the company would obtain from the latter.
He was charged with soliciting bribery near The Gardens hotel in Lingkaran Syed Putra, Mid Valley City here in March 2011, between 12.30am and 2am
The second amended charge was to receive RM3.3 thousand as an incentive to help Zarul Ahmad’s company secure the underwater tunnel project, valued at RM6.34 thousand.
It is alleged that he received the bribe while serving as Prime Minister of Penang in the Prime Minister’s Office in the Komtar Building in George Town, Penang, between January 2011 and August 2017.
Both charges were punishable under section 24 (1) of the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, with up to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of not less than RM 100,000 or five times the reward value.
The prosecution was led by Deputy Prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, while Gobind Singh Deo acted as Lim’s attorney.
In subsequent statements to reporters, Gobind said that he had requested the date to give the defense sufficient time to review the eight volumes of documents provided by the prosecution.
