PETALING JAYA: Former Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng will likely be slapped with two more corruption charges at Butterworth Sessions Court in Penang next week, says a source.

“He is likely to face charges related to the RM6.3bil Penang submarine tunnel project,” the source added.

In August, the DAP secretary general and the Bagan deputy were charged in Kuala Lumpur with soliciting a bribe from the company that was awarded the contract to undertake the controversial RM6.3bil project when he was the prime minister of Penang.

Lim sought trial on the charges under Section 16 (a) (A) of the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.

According to the charge sheet, it is alleged that he requested 10% of the profits from the senior director of Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd, Datuk Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli, as an incentive to obtain the contract for the project. Zenith was awarded the project.

The crime was allegedly committed at a hotel in Lingkaran Syed Putra, Mid Valley City, in March 2011.

Two days later, Lim was indicted in Butterworth Court of Sessions for allegedly abusing his position as then Penang’s chief minister to help Zarul’s company be appointed to undertake the construction of the main roads and the underwater tunnel.

In addition, he was charged with his wife Betty Chew Gek Cheng for using his position for gratification, related to a RM11.6 thousand project in Batu Kawan, in which Chew allegedly had an interest.
