Annuar Musa says that the proposed bridge project will be implemented through the collaboration of the public and private sector.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government agreed to build a bridge connecting Labuan with the mainland of Sabah through a Private Finance Initiative (PFI), Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa said today.

He said his ministry and the ministry of works were in the process of finalizing the terms of reference for the request for proposal (RFP) process to build the bridge.

“The proposed bridge construction project will be implemented through public and private sector collaboration and through privatization or PFI.

“This cooperation can ensure a smooth and transparent implementation of the project through competitive tenders,” he said today in the Dewan Rakyat in response to Rozman Isli (Warisan-Labuan), who asked if the cost of the bridge construction would be borne by the government or the private sector.

Annuar said the public-private partnership project could help develop the economy through private investment and reduce the burden on the government.

He said the ministry expected the terms of the RFP to be presented by interested companies before the end of this year.

“Then it will take six to eight months to complete the RFP documents in detail to enable the bidding.

“By September next year, the bidders will be evaluated and it is expected that in October we can finalize which method will be used and which company will be chosen to build the bridge,” he said.
