KUCHING: The government is considering reopening its border to help boost the tourism sector, says Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
“We are now negotiating with countries like Singapore, Brunei, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and New Zealand that have been identified as green zones,” he said.
said after visiting the Sarawak Center of Technical Excellence (CENTEXS) here yesterday.
Nancy said she received many requests from local tourism industry players to consider the matter in order to keep her business afloat.
“However, this matter needs to be discussed further with other ministries, such as the Ministry of Health, to ensure that we are allowed to do it (reopen the country’s border) to boost our tourism sector,” he said.
When asked if the green travel bubble would help boost the tourism sector, Nancy said: “Yes, even some of the hotels, like the one in Langkawi, are fully booked.
“So, it was a good initiative.”
In the meantime, he also urged parkland visitors traveling elsewhere on vacation to fully practice standard operating procedure, especially in maintaining physical detachment during their travels.
“We don’t want Covid-19 cases to increase after the government approves the green travel bubble because, at the end of the day, it will affect the economy, especially our tourism sector,” he said. – Bernama
