PETALIZING JAYA: The federal government is considering reopening other places of worship important to the country’s five main religions in addition to Islam.
This is after the Minister in charge of Islamic Affairs released the standard operating procedure (SOP) for mosques to pray on Fridays starting today.
Chief Minister (Security Group) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (pix) said that the Minister of National Unity, Datuk Seri, Dr. Maximus Ongkili will discuss the matter and discuss the SOP with representatives of the other five major religions: Christianity, Buddhism , Hinduism, Sikhism, Taoism. .
Maximus will present the matter at the special meeting attended by the ministers.
“It will be presented on Saturday or next Tuesday,” Ismail Sabri said at today’s daily press conference.
He also said that ministers are awaiting a detailed report from the Minister in charge of Islamic Affairs on compliance with social distancing and adherence to social discipline today, before deciding that they should adjust the SOP for mosques during the Order period. “We will see what happens today … there are no guarantees, but if there are people who violate the SOP, they may be able to recover that allowance to go to the mosque to pray,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri also said that authorities are still considering the SOP for filming for drama, television series and movies to ensure that filming can adhere to social estrangement.
“There may be cases where they don’t adhere to social distancing, and we have to keep monitoring the current situation, since a film crew is usually made up of a lot of people,” he said.
He said the proposal, which was presented by the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, is still being studied and they may only know if they can have the SOP after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
He added that the Enhanced MCO (EMCO) for Selayang Baru, Gombak, Selangor, officially ends today after all residents have been screened for Covid-19 infections.
