KUALA LUMPUR: The government is using satellite technology through the Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) to provide Internet service in rural and remote areas throughout the country, the Senate was informed.
Communications and Multimedia Deputy Minister Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin said this was in line with the ministry’s move that focuses on improving communications infrastructure by providing high-speed broadband coverage using various technologies.
However, he admitted that the use of satellite technology was not the best long-term solution to provide that service.
“This is because the broadband service provided through satellite technology has its weaknesses, including capacity based on limited capacity, high operating and maintenance costs, and stability issues in the event of bad weather or power outages. .
“However, with the continued development of satellite technology, the ministry will continue to evaluate and consider the use of this technology in areas unreachable by fiber optics or 4G technology,” he said during question time at the Dewan Negara session today.
I was responding to a question from Senator Adrian Banie Lasimbang who wanted to know the latest technology adopted by the government to ensure access to the 4G coverage network in remote areas and blind spots in Sabah.
Zahidi said the ministry will work with service providers and the Sabah government to carry out a study to identify the best solution to ensure these areas enjoy adequate mobile speed.
He said this was crucial as the topography and population of remote areas in Sabah would be the deciding factors in ensuring an effective, viable and future-proof network structure.Called
