If you are subscribed to many streaming services like Netflix and the like, you have probably faced the problem of switching between apps to watch exclusive shows from any of the services. It’s by no means a chore, but you’ve probably had a feeling it should be simpler. Google just announced Google TV, a smart TV interface that seeks to make that happen.

The potentially confusing name aside, Google TV works like Google Assistant works on the phone. Ask it to search for your favorite shows and it will show you regardless of which subscription service it belongs to. If you have smart home devices like a security camera, you can also control them from here.
Of course, Google TV should not be confused with Android TV, the actual operating system for smart TVs. To make things even more confusing, Google also announced that it will replace the Google Play Movies & TV app on mobile devices with Google TV.
For now, it seems like it will be a while before we can make use of this. It will first be available on the new Chromecast with Google TV. The app mentioned above will also be updated with the new name starting with Android devices. But naturally, this will happen first in the US, and other countries will be later in the queue. And finally, the new interface will be available on televisions from Android TV partners such as Sony from 2021.
