Google Photos to End Free and Unlimited Storage: What Difference Does It Make for You?

Google has announced that as of June 1, 2021, all content added to the company’s Photos platform, regardless of quality, will count toward the account holder’s 15GB of free storage. Beyond that, users will have to purchase more space by signing up for a Google One subscription. Fortunately, until the deadline hits, it is still possible to upload an unlimited amount of photos, which will not count towards the storage limit on the future.

Currently, images backed up in high quality in Google Photos are stored for free and in an unlimited number, although the files are slightly compressed to save storage space. Videos over 1080p are also reformatted to HD (1080p). Currently, only photos imported in their original quality are deducted from the 15GB free storage limit for Google accounts, beyond which users must pay more.

As of June 1, 2021, all new photos and videos uploaded, regardless of quality, will count towards the user’s assigned storage capacity. Once the free 15GB is used up, users will need to sign up for Google One through a paid subscription to store more photos online in their Google account.

However, images uploaded before the deadline will not be included in the 15GB limit, so users can take advantage of the warning to upload their photo files. After that, it’s inevitable that anyone wanting to stay within their 15GB of free storage will have to make decisions.

Google One is the general service for all Google online storage facilities (Gmail, Drive, and Photos). There are several subscription plans available that offer varying amounts of storage space, starting at US $ 1.99 (RM8.20) per month for 100GB.

Please note that Google Pixel smartphone owners will continue to enjoy unlimited free storage space for all high-quality photos and videos uploaded from their device.
