Good news! TNB will offer discounts starting January 1, current rates remain

KUALA LUMPUR: A rebate of two sen per kilowatt hour for all Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) account holders will be effective from January 1, 2021.

The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Datuk, Dr. Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, said that the reimbursement will last for six months until June 30.

“The government also agreed to keep TNB’s average base rate at 39.45 sen / kilowatt hour by 2021,” he told a news conference at the Peninsular Malaysia Forest Department here on Wednesday (December 23).

Shamsul added that the decision was made to extend TNB’s Second Regulatory Period (RP2) (2018-2020) under the Incentive-Based Regulation mechanism until December 31, 2021.

“The government also agreed to pass the savings on to all TNB users due to the drop in coal and gas costs in the second half of the year.

‘With the two sen bonus, up to 7.5 million home users will be able to enjoy a fall of between 3.6% and 9.2% in their electricity bill.

“Commercial users will enjoy a drop of between 4% and 5.2%, while industrial users will see a reduction of between 4.6% and 6.1%,” he said.

Meanwhile, electricity rates at the Kulim High Technology Park (KHTP) will remain at 35.70s per kilowatt hour by 2021.

“After that, all non-household electricity users in the KHTP will enjoy a reduction of 2.1s per kilowatt hour from January 1 to June 30, 2021.

“This is expected to bring savings of 3.83% to 3.89% for commercial users and 2.6% to 5.64% for industrial users on the KHTP,” he said.

The minister added that the government hoped that the reimbursement would help lower people’s cost of living and help businesses that were hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.
