Golf: DeChambeau Masters hopes in tatters after losing ball

AUGUSTA, Georgia (Reuters) – Bryson DeChambeau’s hopes of adding a green jacket to his US Open trophy were in tatters after he incurred a fumble under unusual circumstances during the second round of the Masters on Friday.

Pre-tournament favorite DeChambeau was already a long way from the lead when he reached the third par four (his 12th hole) at Augusta National.

And a triple bogey made his task even more difficult and left him with some work to do, even to make the cut midway.

DeChambeau lost his ball when he hooked it to the left of third fairway, apparently in wet, muddy rough.

If spectators had been at the scene, it is likely that someone would have seen the ball drop, but with only a couple of sheriffs in the vicinity it was not.

After failing to locate the ball within the allotted three minutes, he had no choice but to return to the tee for his third shot.

DeChambeau was three over par for the round after 12 holes, and one over overall when play was stopped for the low-light day.

He was 10 shots behind the leader and will probably need to hit a shot or two over the final six holes on Saturday morning to get a chance to make the cut.
