BUKIT KAYU HITAM: Despite facing invisible threats, General Operations Force (GOF) personnel are not intimidated in their task of ending smuggling activities along the country’s borders.
GOF 3rd Battalion Operations Officer Inspector Khor Kai Zhen said exposing themselves to danger is part of law enforcement, but they could reduce risk with the optimal level of preparedness.
“Like what happened here yesterday (the shooting incident involving a GOF staff) when they (the smugglers) saw that our security forces were enforcing strict border security, they wanted revenge, so they took a shot.
“If they had wanted to distract us, they would have fired their air rifles, they have happened many times before, but no one was injured at that time,” he said when he met during a scouting operation at the scene of the shooting incident in which personnel from the GOF Lance Corporal Muhammad Amirul Amir (pix) was slightly injured near a command post on the Malaysian-Thai border.
Khor said that although an air rifle was used, the bullet could penetrate the body and cause serious injury, especially if it was a close-range shot.
Meanwhile, Inspector Muhammad Adlizan Admancur, leader of the GOF Fifth Platoon, said that four shooting incidents in a month is a fairly high number in a short period, but it has never affected him emotionally in the performance of his duty.
“We continue as usual, what happened will not break our spirits to continue protecting peace in our country,” he said.
In the 6.15pm incident on Wednesday, 26-year-old Muhammad Amirul was grazed on his abdomen by a ball bearing after being shot with an air rifle from across the border while on patrol at the border between Malaysia and Thailand near the M16 post.
Police Inspector General Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador was reported to have previously said that the gunshot incident at the border that killed French Government corporal Baharuddin Ramli, 54, on Tuesday was the third incident this month. Baharuddin was posthumously promoted to sergeant for his bravery.
The first shooting incident was reported to have occurred on November 12, while the second occurred on November 15, while the case of Muhammad Amirul was the fourth this month.Called
