Give us soft loans, gasoline sellers appeal to government

The Malaysian Gasoline Dealers Association says that many station owners do not have the funds to buy enough gasoline to meet the expected increase in demand once the MCO is lifted.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Gasoline Distributors Association (PDAM) has urged the government to consider providing financial support to service station owners to help them recover and start their business again after the motion control order is lifted (MCO).

PDAM President Khairul Annuar Abdul Aziz said at this time that many station owners did not have the funds to buy enough gasoline to meet the expected increase in demand when the MCO rises.

He said the downward trend in fuel prices and weaker traffic due to the MCO had seriously affected service station operators.

“In early March, until mid-April, the price of gasoline dropped several times. When the price dropped dramatically, we lost a lot because we had bought it earlier at a higher price.

“Overall, the industry lost around RM170 million, or RM60,000 to RM100,000 per station,” he said in an interview with Bernama TV via Skype.

Khairul said problems will arise when the MCO is lifted as service station operators will not have the money to meet the increased demand for gasoline at that time.

“The issue will be serious as our distributors’ working capital has been reduced due to falling prices and losses suffered during the MCO.

“If the government can consider giving us a soft loan, then it will be great. A soft loan will be useful, “he said.
