TUARAN: Perikatan Nasional (PN) chief information officer Mohamed Azmin Ali says that Sabah PPBM chief Hajiji Noor should have a chance to become the state’s prime minister if the coalition and the party succeed in winning the elections.
He said Hajiji deserved the chance to lead the state, describing his PPBM colleague as a “strong and clean” candidate.
“The matter has been publicly announced by the prime minister. For PN, Hajiji is a candidate who deserves to guarantee the future of Sabah and the people. They (people) should know this, ”he said when meeting with reporters at a PN event here today.
Earlier in his speech at the event, Azmin said that Sabahans needed an outstanding leader, adding that Hajiji was the man for the job.
“I support him as chief minister. It’s not just my point of view, but he has the personality, the character and the knowledge, and the Sabahans need that figure, “said Azmin.
He also urged Warisan president Shafie Apdal to stop playing on anti-peninsula sentiments as it would disrupt the country’s harmony, referring to Warisan’s motto “Sabah for Sabahans.”
“So far he says, ‘Sabah for Sabahans’, who are you? Sabah is also part of (Malaysia) and I also have a responsibility to listen to the voice of the Sabahans.
“The name of the party is Warisan (inheritance) but they cannot leave a good inheritance for Sabah. Why don’t they cooperate (with Putrajaya)? If there is no Sabah and Sarawak, there is no Malaysia, ”he said.
When asked to comment on being kicked out by Warisan supporters while campaigning in Membakut, Azmin said it was an example of how the Shafie-led party had disrupted harmony by playing on anti-peninsula sentiments.
“I tried to get the support of Warisan supporters, but there was a young man who played on anti-peninsula sentiments. But I responded with a smile because I didn’t want to provoke anyone. In fact, some of them came and apologized to me (for the incident).
“I just hope that Shafie does not fan the flames that may divide Malaysian unity in this election. This (election) is part of democracy, but we cannot use this stage to dwell on issues that may lead to a schism between the federal government and Sabah. “
