The husband of Hong Kong star Gillian Chung, Michael Lai, said he would take legal action against false accusations, in his first comments to the media since news of their separation broke last Friday.

The Taiwanese cosmetic doctor, who appeared yesterday at his clinic without his wedding ring, told reporters that he decided to speak to them to protect the privacy of his patients and urged them not to meet outside his clinic.

“This is a regrettable incident and I am very sad about it. I hope everyone can give me a little space,” he said. “I respect her and will no longer react to the incident.”

He said he has instructed his lawyers to take legal action against the unfounded allegations circulating on the Internet.

“I am immune to unsavory words in the past two to three years, but I will fully sue if these false rumors are defamatory,” he said.

The doctor, who turns 31 this month, married Chung, 39, less than two years ago. Rumors that their marriage is on the rocks had haunted them last year.

Last Friday, he uploaded a long Instagram post admitting to being single again, after media reports of their breakup appeared. He wrote that Chung, half of Cantopop’s twin girl group, regretted marrying him.

Meanwhile, Chung has not publicly reacted to the disclosure, confirming the separation only through his agency Emperor Entertainment Group. Her only social media post since last Friday was that she wished all mothers a happy Mother’s Day on Sunday.

The couple’s romance was first reported in October 2017. They got engaged in February 2018 after a six-month engagement, held a wedding ceremony in May 2018, and were officially married in December 2018. – The Straits Times / Asia News Network
