KUALA LUMPUR: After the raids on gambling venues and after their power was cut off, operators are now using coffee shops as fronts.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Mazlan Lazim said that the police had recently detected this new tactic.

He said these operators would enter coffee shops as customers and then use mobile devices to run their gambling activities.

“They are doing this because they have realized that if they rent a venue, we would cut off their electricity,” he said after officiating the removal of gambling-related items by KL police at the Alam Damai police station in Cheras here.

He said using coffee shops made it easier for them to flee if there was a police raid.

Mazlán said electricity supplies were recently cut off to 51 illegal gambling venues, while 24 other venues would also be subject to similar measures in the near future.

“We are identifying the owners of the premises who rented their stores for gambling activities and the owners of the business licenses who abused them for gambling activities. They will face action, ”he said.
