Approximately 300 of the Kuala Lumpur homeless will receive jobs with nine employers who will join the Career Preparation Program of the Ministry of Federal Territories.
Companies that have joined the initiative include Adabi Consumer Industries Sdn Bhd, Hartalega NGC Sdn Bhd, Harumi Brands Sdn Bhd, Top Glove Sdn Bhd, Tesco Malaysia and Trendcell Sdn Bhd.
The program, which is a joint effort with the Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) and the Kuala Lumpur Department of Labor, will see the city’s homeless people trained and hired for jobs, Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar said Muse.
Approximately 800 of the city’s homeless population have been placed in 12 temporary shelters since the movement control order (MCO) began on March 18.
“On May 5, three of the private companies selected 72 homeless people for interviews. Of these, 21 people were hired and will start work on May 13, while the rest will be interviewed by other employers soon.”
“We hope that at least 300 of the homeless will be recruited during the first phase of the program,” it said in a statement on Friday (May 8).
He added that next week there will be information sessions and projections for interviews in six other shelters.
According to Annuar, those hired would have a basic salary as established in the 2020 Minimum Wages Order, will be entitled to annual vacations and overtime and will also be covered by the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) and the Social Security Organization (Socso ).
He added that the companies would also provide housing for the workers.
“We hope this initiative ensures that they will no longer be homeless and have a better quality of life,” he said.
The program is also supported by the Department of Welfare, Perkeso, the Credit Counseling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK), the Ministry of Women and Family Affairs and the Digital Economy Corporation of Malaysia (MDEC) , among others.
