KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) did everything possible to avoid friendly fights, but was unable to reach an understanding with Barisan Nasional (BN) allies on certain seats, Vice President Radin Malleh said today.
He said PBS felt there should be no overlap if the seats are laid out correctly.
“We didn’t want friendly fights because we think we can win those seats easily because we have strong grassroots support there … the main intention is to win the elections,” he told reporters during the launch of the PBS manifesto in Penampang today.
“But it seems that other parties want to compete anyway, as they think they are strong there too. We cannot withdraw our candidates.
“In this election, it is a bit difficult to avoid confrontations. The best and strongest party will be victorious. “
He also said that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had advised that, if possible, the parties in BN, Perikatan Nasional and their allies should avoid clashing with each other.
PBS plans to contest a total of eight seats against the BN parties, namely Umno in the Bengkoka, Tanjung Aru and Telupid seats; Component BN Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah in Matunggong, Tandek and Kadamaian; and Sabah MCA in Kapayan and Karamunting.
Radin said that the PBS electoral machinery would cooperate with the BN parties in seats where they would not clash.
“Where there are no clashes, we will work together with other parties in the respective areas,” he said, adding that he hopes that there will be no act of sabotage despite the clash of seats.
“The goal is to overthrow the Warisan-led government.”
He also rejected claims that Warisan Plus parties would benefit if there were divided votes due to friendly fighting.
“That is not necessarily the issue because it depends on the people… Warisan is not very popular anyway. The strongest party will win, ”Radin said.
