PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s controversial comments on French racial attacks drew further criticism from the US Ambassador to Malaysia Kamala Shirin Lakhdir, who criticized the former prime minister’s alleged endorsement of violence.

I express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the people of France after the terrible attacks in Nice and Paris.

“I totally disagree with the recent statement by Dr. Mahathir. Freedom of expression is a right, calling for violence is not, ”Kamala said in a statement on Friday (October 30).

On Thursday (October 29), Twitter deleted one of Dr. Mahathir’s tweets that was part of a long thread, which initially marked it as “glorifying violence.”

Dr. Mahathir tweeted that “Muslims have the right to be angry and kill millions of French people for the massacres of the past,” he said, adding that Muslims, however, have not taken revenge in this way.

Dr. Mahathir’s controversial tweets came just hours after a knife attack on the Notre-Dame basilica in Nice, France, where three people were killed and others injured.
