KUCHING: Kuching-born Francisca Luhong James made Sarawak proud today after being crowned Miss Universe Malaysia this year, beating 17 other finalists.

25-year-old Orang Ulu was named the winner of Miss Universe Malaysia 2020 after being judged by actor, director and producer Dato ‘Hans Isaac, Miss Universe Malaysia 2011 winner Deborah Henry, and fashion designer Carven Ong.

Meanwhile, the first runner-up went to Charissa Chong, followed by second runner-up Serena Chai and third runner-up Neha Verma.

The grand finale was streamed live online tonight (September 5) on the contest’s official website for those who had purchased tickets to see them.

The event saw the finalists go through several rounds of evaluation, including a parade of evening dresses, swimsuits, and a question and answer session with the MC.

Francisca, who works in the field of public relations and marketing in Kuala Lumpur, appeared in an interview with The Borneo Post Online on September 2.

His father, James Bungan, is a descendant of Orang Ulu from Ulu Sungai Asap, while his mother Pauline Japok is an Iban from Kanowit.

He said that if he wins, he would like to meet his idols: celebrity and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey and former First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama.

“I want to know what you think, how it feels to talk to inspiring women. I’ve watched a lot of Oprah Winfrey shows. I even cried watching the Christmas goodness show.

“I want to make the children smile and cry with joy too. Watch them grow up to be successful people and make their family smile, watch them go to school and get the education they deserve.

“It is a satisfying feeling that I can never describe. It is beyond words. It’s amazing how women can do such wonders, ”Francisca said.
