MIRI: The four crew members who disappeared after their ship sank in the South China Sea off the coast of Miri in northern Sarawak early Tuesday (October 27) were found safe.
The director general of the Malaysian Maritime Control Agency, Admiral Datuk Mohd Zubil Mat Som, tweeted that the four missing were found around 11:25 a.m.
Early in the morning, the Dayang Topaz with more than 100 crew on board sank off the north of Sarawak after running into problems.
A massive search and rescue operation was launched after the ship’s distress signals were picked up.
Subsequently, the MMEA confirmed that 121 people had been rescued.
He said that the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Putrajaya received a report that Dayang Topaz was in trouble from the crew of another ship called Sapura Construction.
“At 6.45am, Sapura Construction received distress signals from another ship, Dayang Topaz, about 7.7 nautical miles off the coast of Kuala Baram in Miri.
“The Sapura Construction team rushed to the site. They saw Dayang Topaz sink.
“MMEA sent our ships along with those of Petronas and Shell. They found that 125 crew members had jumped into the sea from the sinking ship.
“At 8.45am, 121 crew members had been rescued.
At that time, four members of the crew were still missing.
Northern Sarawak has been battered by strong winds and heavy rain in the past two days. The ship is believed to have been hit by massive waves.
