A former Tesla Inc employee who stood up to its CEO, Elon Musk, agreed to pay the company $ 400,000 for informing reporters about production delays at its Gigafactory in Nevada, United States, according to a court document.

The payment is part of a proposed settlement from a lawsuit filed by Tesla in 2018 that accused Martin Tripp of illegally divulging trade secrets about the production of the Tesla Model 3.

As part of the settlement, Tripp admitted to violating trade secret laws and confidentiality agreements and promised to pay Tesla $ 25,000 for continuing to reveal information about the company, despite being ordered by a judge to pass.

Tripp was a process technician at Tesla’s Gigafactory from 2017 to 2018. While still at the company, he emailed reporters saying he would not be able to meet Musk’s publicly stated goal of producing 5,000 Model 3s a week.

Tesla fired Tripp when the company discovered that he was the source of the information. He and Musk subsequently exchanged insults publicly.

Tripp countered Musk for libel, but the federal judge handling the case dismissed him and ruled that the technician had not shown that the CEO acted with real malice.

The case is Tesla Inc v. Tripp, 3: 18-cv-00296, US District Court, District of Nevada (Reno). – Bloomberg
