The 27-year-old Belgian forward traded Old Trafford for the San Siro last August in a £ 76.5 million exchange following a nightmarish final season with the Red Devils.

Since then, the former United leader has flourished at Inter, scoring 34 times in all competitions last season.

And his goals helped the club climb to second place in Italy’s top flight, finishing just one point behind champions Juventus.

The forward’s impressive form, which helped Conte’s team mount a serious challenge for cutlery in Italy and Europe, has mocked the criticism he received ahead of his departure from Old Trafford.

Lukaku told The Times: “A year ago when I was in England, I was ‘lazy, I didn’t run, I didn’t do this or that.’

“Here, they call me the hardest worker in the room.

They will call me slow and I say, ‘slow? I slow? Can’t keep up with Man U’s game?

“If you look at me playing here and there, I mean, there are improvements, yes, but the [same] Rom is still here.

“Things happen in football, but it is something that you have to explain to the next generation of kids, that you have to have full control over your destiny.

“And if you look at me now you see a different result, you see the whole person, you see all the potential.

“You see what he could have been doing in England.”

Lukaku, joined United from Everton for £ 75 million in the summer of 2017, after scoring 87 goals in 166 games for the Goodison Park team.

And the Belgian racked up 26 goals in all competitions in his debut season with the Red Devils.

However, the former Chelsea ace revealed disturbing noises about his quality that had started shortly after his arrival at Old Trafford.

And this was despite the warm reception he received from the club’s director, Ed Woodward, former coach Mourinho and current coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Lukaku added: “Everyone at the club was very nice, from Ed Woodward to the owners to Matthew Judge. [transfer negotiator], to José Mourinho, to Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and his staff, everyone in the canteen.

I was like, you know what? Eff this. I’m out.”

But things around him were too negative a spiral for me.

“They call me slow and I say, ‘slow? Me slow? Can’t keep up with Man U’s game?

“If I had gone slow I would not have scored the penalty as I did against Sevilla in the final. That is two years later.

“Are you going to say that I at 27 is faster than at 25?

“That’s what I’m trying to say. It’s just little things. I was like, you know what? Eff this. I’m out.”

Lukaku, who has made two starts so far this season, has already scored three goals for Inter Milan.

And the San Siro team, currently third in Serie A, play Lazio on Sunday afternoon.
