BUKIT MERTAJAM: A former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer was fined 10,000 RM by the magistrates court here today after he was found guilty of extorting a police officer three years ago.

The court also ordered the man to serve a 24-month jail sentence if he could not pay the fine.

Judge Sri Pracha Nanthini Balabedha sentenced Rommy Ma’i’aruf, 41, after finding that the defense had not raised a reasonable doubt.

On November 30, 2017, Rommy was charged with intentionally extorting and inciting fear on 35-year-old Ahmad Hasbi Mohd Fauzi, who is the officer in charge of denouncing illegal gambling activities in Seberang Prai Tengah district.

Rommy had extorted RM3,000 per month from Hasbi and was charged with committing the crime on the Seberang Jaya Petronas gas station compound around 9:30 pm on June 8, 2017.

The charge, framed in Section 384 of the Penal Code, provides a prison sentence of up to 10 years, or a fine, or both upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Nazri Abdul Rahim appeared for the indictment while the accused was represented by lawyer Piyara Singh.
