PUTRAJAYA: Two people, including a former senior officer in the Armed Forces, have been arrested over allegations that they submitted false claims for road improvement works in the interior of Sarawak.
The other person is a director of a supply company.
The 62 and 56-year-old suspects were arrested at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. respectively on Friday (September 18) when they came forward to have their statements recorded.
Deputy Secretary Siti Rozilawati Mohd Zanin allowed the MACC application to return them for three days.
According to the sources, the false claims referred to works under the Defense Ministry that were to be carried out on 10 roads in Sarawak.
It is understood that the total value of the project was RM800 thousand.
The road improvement works were carried out under the ministry’s “Jiwa Murni” project, and the company was awarded the project from 2010 to 2016.
The “Jiwa Murni” project was an initiative to connect small towns in the interior of Sarawak.
The project was intended to benefit those living in the interior of Sarawak, including Miri, Kapit, Ba’kelalan, Limbang and Belaga.
On September 8, two directors of a company in Kuching were arrested in connection with the same case.
The directors, both 44, are business partners and owners of three companies that authorities believe have been monopolizing the projects.
