SHAH ALAM: A former CEO of a research institute has been arrested on suspicion of receiving bribes totaling RM100,000 related to the purchase of land.
The suspect, a professor, has been in preventive detention for six days until November 19.
The request for pre-trial detention submitted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission was approved by Judge Syajaratudur Abd Rahman on Saturday (November 14).
Sources said the 54-year-old suspect was arrested at Selangor MACC’s office around 6 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 13) when he was summoned to the office.
It was learned that he allegedly sued and received bribes for the consultation service for the purchase of the land.
Sources said the land was intended for development involving the agency it was serving at the time and was intentionally priced above market value.
“We were made to understand that the additional value was intended to pay the suspect,” said a source.
Selangor MACC Director Datuk Alias Salim confirmed the arrest and the case is being investigated under Section 16 (a) (A) of the MACC Act.
