KUALA LUMPUR (16 Oct): Former Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah said he has notified Parliament of his intention to file a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Former Bersatu leader who is now with Tun’s Pejuang party Dr Mahathir Mohamad submitted the letter to President Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun to comply with the stipulated two-week notice required by the Rules of Parliament.
“I have sent the letter to the president of Dewan Rakyat on a motion of no confidence against the most honorable prime minister dated October 15, 2020, for the next session of Parliament,” he said on Twitter.
Soon after, it was revealed that Jerlun Datuk MP Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, son of former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir, also filed a notice of a similar motion of no confidence against Muhyiddin.
Muhyiddin’s support in Parliament was again questioned after opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim met with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and claimed to have won the support of more than 120 deputies to take over the government.
It is Azhar’s prerogative to accept the motions or not.
There is already a pending vote of no confidence against Muhyiddin, which former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir successfully introduced to Parliament in May.
The Muhyddin government subsequently removed the president who accepted the earlier motion, Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof, and installed Azhar in office.
This week, Umno Tengku senior lawmaker Razaleigh Hamzah published a letter he wrote to Azhar urging the latter to put the motion against Muhyiddin on Parliament’s agenda to allow this to happen.
Azhar said he could not do it without the agreement of the minister of the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Parliament and the Law.
This suggests that the attempts of the two deputies will likely face the same hurdle.
However, at least one constitutional expert has pointed out that the federal budget will be presented at the November-December meeting and that blocking it would serve the same purpose as a vote of no confidence against the Muhyiddin administration.
Parliament will meet from November 2 to December 15 for its next meeting. – Malay Post
