SEREMBAN: A former lawyer has pleaded not guilty in separate magistrate courts here to eight counts of defrauding a 59-year-old man out of 57,300 ringgit.

Annie Maria Norman Gregory, 60, called for trial on all charges when she appeared separately before Justices V. Vanita and Mahyun Yusof.

The defendant allegedly committed the crimes between February 9, 2018 and February 22, 2019 at Wisma TNB in ​​Petaling Jaya and Persiaran Seremban 3 near here.

She was accused of misleading Jude Ignatius Lazaroo into believing that she needed the money to pay for the withdrawal process of commissions totaling RM4.36 thousand from Bank Negara when in reality this was not true.

Based on the facts of the case, the defendant also promised to return the money to the victim and promised to pay him for the assistance.

Annie Maria was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

M. Gobinathan, who represented the defendants, asked the court for a low bail as she had been unemployed for the past five years and had to support her elderly father.

The bond was set at RM26,000 and both courts set October 1 for remission.
