KUALA BERANG: A Form Six student was arrested in connection with the murder of a 19-year-old woman in Kampung Lubuk Batu, Telemong, yesterday.
Hulu Terengganu District Police Chief Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the suspect was a schoolmate of the victim up to Form Five. She was arrested today at 8.15am when she reported for questioning at the Telemong Police Station. Her mother accompanied her.
Mohd Adli said that a video recording showing the suspect near the victim’s home had gone viral since last night after Siti Nur Surya Ismail’s body was found at her home by her 15-year-old sister at 2.30 p.m. Siti Nur Surya suffered cut injuries and his left hand was cut off.
Adli said the suspect gave dubious answers during questioning and had injuries like bite marks on his hands, which he is believed to have sustained during a fight.
“The belongings reported as missing from the victim’s home were recovered from the suspect’s home during follow-up investigations,” he said. “The suspect’s house is only two kilometers from the victim’s,” he said.
He said the suspect had visited Siti Nur Surya at 9 a.m. yesterday and a fight was believed to have broken out due to a misunderstanding.
Police are still searching for a vegetable knife believed to have been used in the incident.
Valuables recovered from the suspect’s home include a phone, cash and beauty kits that belong to the victim, he said.
The suspect will be brought to Marang Magistrates Court tomorrow for a request for pretrial detention.
Siti Nur Surya’s brother, Mohd Zarif Amir, 29, said his mother Zaini Musa, 55, who suffers from brain cancer, has not yet been informed of his death.
