PETALING JAYA: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will ask the head of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Azam Baki, to discuss the agency’s plans to combat corruption and improve the integrity of the country’s public administration.
PAC President Wong Kah Woh said MACC will also present a report and comment on the findings of Transparency International’s (TI) Asia 2020 Global Corruption Barometer report.
The report, released last week, had found that 71% of Malaysians thought government corruption was a big problem, and 39% felt that corruption had increased in the past 12 months.
It also found that 36% of Malaysians considered their MPs to be corrupt, a higher percentage than seven other countries in Asia, including Bangladesh (18%), Taiwan (17%) and China (11%).
TI surveyed 20,000 people in 17 Asian countries. The Malaysia portion of the study was conducted between July 2019 and June this year.
“PAC believes that the figures show the distrust of Malaysians towards the integrity of the country’s public administration and its members.
“Contributing factors must be identified and efforts to combat corruption should be enhanced,” Wong said in a statement today.
He said the effectiveness of the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP) required a review, as the survey was conducted at the same time that the NACP was implemented.
Wong said the PAC would also contact TI for information on the report.
