KOTA KINABALU: Floods affected low-lying areas of the city here and other districts on the west coast of Sabah, following heavy rains overnight.

Dozens of parked cars were partially submerged in the flooding in outlying areas of the city, while many offices and schools saw a low turnout after heavy rains and Covid-19 concerns in the city.

Social media users reported flooding along Jalan Tuaran and Telipok, villages in Inanam and Manggatal within the city limits, as well as parts of neighboring Penampang and Tuaran due to heavy rains that began to subside at the noon on Monday (October 5).

Certain roads in Penampang were passable for heavy vehicles, while at noon, water levels began to rise in the Penampang area.

Firefighters are also on alert for any distress call and have been deployed to help in case of any eventuality.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department said it has received reports of flooding in Taman Telipok Jaya along Jalan Tuaran, Kampung Kaulan in Tuaran.

So far, there have been no reports of casualties.

Social media users also reported minor landslides along the Tamparuli-Ranau highway.

Forecasters expect poor weather conditions to persist on the west coast and inland Sabah for the next 48 hours.

Other districts to be affected include Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort and Keningau, as well as Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Kota Belud, Kudat and Kota Marudu.

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhsd (SESB) is on call 24 hours a day to provide immediate assistance in the event of power outages due to bad weather.

SESB Senior General Manager Norhizami Abu Hasan said strong winds and falling trees had cut off power supplies to certain areas.

“Our technical team is ready to act immediately to restore power to the affected areas,” it said in a statement Monday.

He said critical areas like hospitals will receive immediate attention in the event of power outages due to damage.

“We advise the public not to touch trees that have downed power lines,” he said, urging the public to immediately inform them of such incidents.
