Five new Covid-19 clusters emerge, including one linked to a security firm in Kepong

PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Health declared the end of five Covid-19 clusters but also announced five new ones.

Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah declared an end to the Bangau-Bangau, Tasik, Olive, Buang Sayang and Kau Sing groups.

“However, five new clusters were reported today. They are known as the Avenue, Kejora, Kasah, Summer and Mengketil groups, ”he said.

The Kejora and Avenue groups were detected in Sabah, while Kasah, Summer, and Mengketil were detected in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kelantan, and Terengganu.

The Avenue group’s index case found in Penampang, Sabah, was identified as a supervisor at a construction site after an assessment of people exhibiting Covid-19 symptoms there.

The patient was subsequently admitted to the Covid-19 Low-Risk Quarantine and Treatment Center in Sabah.

“We found 109 more cases through active contact tracing in this group,” he said on Tuesday (November 17).

Meanwhile, nine of the 71 people tested for Covid-19 in the Kejora group that was detected in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah tested positive for the disease.

In the Klang Valley, the Kasah cluster was reported after 19 people from a security company tested positive for Covid-19 in Kepong.

In the Summer group, which was detected in northeast Penang, 11 people tested positive and were admitted to Pulau Pinang Hospital.

The Mengketil cluster was detected at Kota Baru, Machang, and Tanah Merah in Kelantan, as well as at Besut in Terengganu.

The index case in this group was identified after an evaluation of a patient with a severe acute respiratory infection (Sari) on November 13.

“In total, 24 people in this group tested positive,” said Dr. Noor Hisham.

The Ministry of Health registered 1,210 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of cases in Malaysia to 49,730.

Of the new cases, 1,191 were locally transmitted while 19 were imported.

Sabah registered 499 new cases including those from the two new groups.

Meanwhile, Selangor registered 259 new cases from existing conglomerates, while there were 238 new cases in Kuala Lumpur.

Dr. Noor Hisham also said that 1,018 patients recovered from the disease, bringing the total recovery to 36,624.

However, the ministry also recorded five new deaths with four deaths in Sabah and one in Perak, bringing the death toll to 318.

All but one of the deaths had underlying health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory problems, heart and kidney disease.

The deceased were between 25 and 80 years old, two of them foreigners.

Currently, Dr. Noor Hisham said that 105 patients are being treated in intensive care units (ICU), and 40 of them require respiratory support.
