ARAU: A nurse’s routine checkup on a newborn baby led to the arrest of five people for allegedly falsifying documents related to child custody.

The five arrested were local, two men and three women, between 30 and 58 years old.

Arau’s OCPD Deputy, Nanda Ma’arof, said police received a report from the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) that a nurse was unable to locate the three-month-old baby during a routine checkup at the family home in Taman. Desa Pauh here on Tuesday.

“When asked by JKM officials, the 30-year-old mother did not explain the baby’s whereabouts and tried to hide the baby’s identity,” she said.

Supt Nanda said the investigation showed that the baby had been released to a Penang couple through the mother’s aunt on Thursday.

Further investigation found that the couple had registered the baby as their biological child on Alor Setar, he added.

All of the suspects, he said, were referred for two days from yesterday for further investigation and the case was being investigated under Section 48 (2) of the 2001 Juvenile Law. – Bernama
