KUANTAN (Bernama): A fisherman has been duped out of RM13,000 by an unknown individual who posed as his daughter over the phone on Friday (December 25).

The head of Pahang’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department, Superintendent Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof, said the 59-year-old fisherman received a call from a woman whose voice sounded almost the same as that of her eldest son, at 11 a.m. while at sea.

He said that his “daughter” told him that he had changed his phone number and asked him to deposit 5,000 ringgit for business expenses and gave him an account number.

“The man asked a friend to make the transaction, before the suspect contacted him again and asked for an additional RM 8,000, saying that the RM 5,000 was insufficient.

“Then he asked his employer to do this transaction. However, upon returning to the coast, he contacted his daughter and was told that she never asked him for money, ”Supt Wazir said in a statement on Sunday (December 27).

It added that the victim filed a report at the Rompin police station, about 80 miles from here, on Saturday and that investigations were ongoing. – Bernama
