FIRST DRIVE: 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross, starting at RM124k

[ad_1]

The 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross has just been released and is available in two variants: 1.8G (RM124k) and 1.8V (RM134k). It may be six years too late to fight the venerable Honda HR-V, but let’s see how this TNGA-based (GA-C) crossover stacks up against the popular B-segment HR-V.

The Corolla Cross is powered by the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder 2ZR-FE engine found in the Corolla sedan. Here, it produces 139 hp at 6,400 rpm and 172 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, with traction sent to the front wheels via a CVT with Sequential Shiftmatic (virtual seven speeds). The front end has a MacPherson Strut setup, while the rear end has a torsion bar suspension.

Between the two variants, the 1.8V is the one you want. It has bi-LED projector headlights, LED DRLs, LED fog lights, LED combination taillights, as well as Toyota Safety Sense. It is the only variant that features autonomous emergency braking, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracking assist, adaptive cruise control (only from 30 km / h) and automatic high beam.

Meanwhile, the 1.8G makes do with blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and tire pressure monitoring system. At least there are still seven airbags, but then again, it copes with halogen headlights, bulb-type daytime running lights, and smaller 17-inch wheels. Check out our first impressions review above to see what we think of it, and you can also check out our launch story for more details.
