Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, former president of the National University of Singapore, has served as the first chief health scientist at the Ministry of Health (MOH) since 2018.

He was director of medical services for the Ministry of Health from 2000 to 2004, during which he led the public health response to the Sars crisis in Singapore.

As the chief health scientist, your primary role is to set the research agenda and work closely with researchers from all Singapore institutions to address high-priority clinical and public health needs.

This is done in three ways amid the pandemic.

First, it works with the Covid-19 research task force, chaired by the executive director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases Leo Yee Sin, to share samples, gather information, and investigate.

The working group is made up of 18 other members of the ministry, public health institutions, the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A * Star) and DSO National Laboratories.

Second, he chairs the grant review panel for the Covid-19 research fund, for which the Ministry of Health and the National Council for Medical Research have set aside $ 20 million.

Third, Professor Tan also works closely with researchers, Singapore clinicians, as well as A * Star to help develop tests and treatments that can be used in hospitals and public health intervention operations.
